The payment schedule

Every payment splits into interest and principal. Early on, more goes to interest; by the end, almost all is principal — which is why paying extra early saves the most. $2,500 · 12 months · 35.99% APR

Standard amortization with equal payments. Lenders calculate interest daily, so your statement may differ by a few cents; the final payment adjusts to clear the balance.

Reading the result

Three numbers, in this order

1

Total repaid

The whole cost in one figure. Two offers with the same monthly payment can differ by hundreds here.

2

Monthly payment vs. the tightest month

Not the average month — the one with the car insurance and the birthday. If it doesn't fit there, lengthen the term.

3

Interest, and how fast it drops

Look at the schedule: paying one extra payment in month two removes more interest than one in month ten.

Guessing your rate honestly

You won't know your APR until the offers arrive. Until then, these are reasonable settings for the slider.

  • 5.99% – 17.99%: good credit, long banking history, income that clears the payment several times over. A credit union may still beat it.
  • 18% – 30%: fair credit or a thin file with steady deposits — the most common band in our network.
  • 35.99%: our representative rate; the honest default for poor credit or a small, short loan.
  • Above 36%: some lenders go here on sub-$1,000 loans. If every offer lands here, read the alternatives first.

What moves your APR

From estimate to offer

The calculator guesses. The offer knows.

A real offer replaces the slider with a lender's actual APR and prints the four federal numbers. Getting one takes three minutes and a soft check — and you can decline it.

Calculator questions

About these numbers

Is the calculator's payment what I'll actually pay?

It's an estimate at whatever APR you set. Your real payment comes from the lender's offer, which may be higher or lower; it's printed on the offer before you sign along with the total of payments. Rates & fees

Why can't I pick 24 months for $500?

You can set it here, but lenders in our network rarely offer two-year terms on small amounts — the interest would rival the principal. Short loans, short terms.

Does the schedule account for paying early?

No — it shows the contracted schedule. Paying extra reduces the balance, so every later interest line shrinks and the loan ends sooner. There's no prepayment penalty.

Why does the final payment differ by a few cents?

Rounding. Lenders compute interest daily and adjust the last payment so the balance lands exactly on zero.
