AlternativesBefore you borrow,
four things that might be free.

A loan is the right tool often enough that we built a site around it. It's still not the first tool. Here is every cheaper option we know, ranked by cost — and, further down, an honest look at the other sites and apps people compare us with.

Ranked by what they cost

Start at the top. Stop when one works.

What people mean, and where to look

If you're searching for an alternative to the old Zebit Market — the shop-now-pay-over-six-months store that closed in 2024 — you probably want one of these four things. zebitusa.com covers the first two.

If you do borrow

Three rules that keep a loan small

Bill + 10%

Borrow the bill, not the limit

Every extra $100 at a representative APR costs about $20 a year.

< 1/5

Payment under a fifth of take-home

If it doesn't fit, lengthen the term and pay early — there's no penalty.

1

One loan at a time

Two overlapping loans is how a $500 problem becomes a $2,000 one.

Alternatives questions

Asked before borrowing

Why does a loan site list ways not to borrow?

Because a loan you didn't need is a bad outcome for you and, eventually, for us. We're paid by lenders when a loan is made; we'd rather earn that from borrowers who tried the free options first and chose us with the numbers in front of them.

What is a payday alternative loan?

A PAL: a small loan from a federal credit union to its members — $200–$2,000, 1–12 months, APR capped at 28%. Cheaper than nearly everything on this page; slower, and you must join the credit union first.

Are earned-wage apps free?

Sometimes. Many charge optional "tips", instant-transfer fees or a monthly subscription; on a $100 advance those can equal a triple-digit APR. Use the free, slower transfer and skip the tip.

What replaced Zebit Market?

Nothing identical. For pay-over-time shopping, BNPL providers and Perpay are closest; for cash, an installment loan through a service like zebitusa.com. What happened to Zebit
